Why is Seo Copywriting Controversial?

As search engine giant Google continues to refine its algorithm updates, quality seo copywriting and engaging web content has become hotter than ever creating a demand for good web content and skilled writing.

Website owners ( if they choose to write their own online content) and copywriters  who can excel at writing web content in a natural and engaging way and also combine that skill with effective seo techniques  are  rewarded with higher ranking on Google and other major search engines, such as Bing and Yahoo.

This type of effective writing is an amazing tool that draws web traffic to a small business’ or Fortune 500’s site as it answers the questions or problem the searcher was looking for or provides the sought after information.  Whether its writing copy for business to consumers or a business to business audience, seo copywriting, effectively written, provides the website owner with access to potential clients or customers through web traffic at lower costs than would be possible through traditional advertising methods.

Furthermore , with new social media tools such as Facebook, Linked In, Twitter, Pinterest, and many other popular social media platforms, the potential for a small business owner’s online content to be distributed widely becomes that much more likely.

In addition, when customers engage with the website owner’s web content either with comments, likes or online reviews, (defined as user-generated content) the potential for a better copy and higher search engine rankings increases.  This type of engagement increases the web content’s value as well as provides an opportunity for the small business owner to engage with his or her customers.  Online reviews give users quick access to information which helps them make informed decisions faster and more easily than ever before.

According to a study regarding online review and customer engagement, conducted by Search Engine Land, they found that…

…findings of this year’s Local Consumer Review Survey (2012) show a positive shift in consumer trust and appreciation of online reviews.

Approximately 72% of consumers surveyed said that they trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations, while 52% said that positive online reviews make them more likely to use a local business.

As a small business owner considers all these positive factors impacting online content, there is no doubt that quality web content is a powerful sales tool to draw potential customers and clients!

So it’s not surprising, that now as the implementation of Google’s  Panda and Penguin updates are rolled out, gone are the days when website owners and writers could use repetitious keywords, thin content, spinned content,  short paragraphs and over optimized web pages to rank high on Google’s or other search engines’ pages.  These types of tactics, which are often referred to as “black hat” techniques, are being roundly punished with lower search engine rankings and unfavorable views from unhappy customers.  Unfortunately, many website owners who chose to ignore Google’s advice to aim for quality online writing and used these tactics are now suffering the consequences of often ill-advised and poorly written web content.

All these changes, which of course has reduced the revenue of many of these sites’ owners as their websites have sunk from their first and second page search engine rankings, has also roiled the seo industry with questions and heated discussions as to what makes up good seo copywriting.

Going forward, the controversy and debate will no doubt continue, however a small business owner can usually find success by assuring that his or her website provides quality content, solid writing that provides good information to potential customers and clients written  according to sound seo copywriting rules and guidelines!
