5 Reasons Why Google Updates Will Improve Local Search

Local search has been discussed over the last few years and many businesses have anticipated its development.  It appears that it’s time has arrived.  According to a recent article at Search Engine Watch, local SEO is fast becoming the hottest thing in search engine optimization.  “ Google has stated that about 1 million Places Pages were being claimed per month, putting them at approximately 9 million now, and over 150 million active users as of June 28” of 2012.

Instead of small “brick & mortar” types of businesses fighting their way into the national market via traditional SEO (search engine optimization) and PPC (pay per click) practices, they might be better served by embracing local SEO techniques.  A small local businesses’ website and online marketing strategy is important but it can be tweaked and modified to provide results that improve local web traffic and lead generation.   What are the advantages of local search?

Improve Ability to Compete on a Local Scale

For those businesses that recognize the power in Local SEO practices and adapt for their local market, they will improve their ability to rank higher on local Google search pages a lot sooner than their competitors.  According to a comprehensive article at Search Engine Land, this is what they had to say about recent changes and how business owners will be affected, they wrote that “business owners are effectively being dropped into the social fray with more customer-interaction potential but also greater demands to learn how to use Google+ to their full advantage. Those who do will be rewarded. There’s a ton of SEO potential here. Most notably, unlike Google Places pages, these new Google+ Local pages will be indexed.”

Build Trust Factor and Credibility

There are some business services that do well marketing themselves online on a national scale but there are other local businesses that serve their market better by emphasizing how they can serve the needs of their local community.  This trust and credibility factor improves for local search “due to the map locations, address verification, customer reviews, images, and videos that can accompany a small business page.”

Utilize Mobile Phone And Local Search

Local map listings are excellent for small businesses who want to be found by people on-the-go and with a high intent to purchase.  With the phenomenal growth of mobile smartphones and assorted phone apps, smartphones are fast becoming the new yellow pages.  I can attest to that with an anecdotal story that happened a few weeks ago when my car broke down on the way to a birthday party.  Using my smartphone, I located a local towing company via the internet and we were on our way within an hour.  The communication, and nearly the whole transaction was handled via text messages ,  smartphone internet search and phone conversations.  Even the location of the breakdown was verified via Google Maps!  This was the power of local search in action.  So, I say sticking to a traditional SEO strategy may keep you out of the mobile game altogether.

Increase Lead Generation and Conversion

Geographic proximity increases the odds that the local searcher will click through, get the information they are searching for and then actually visit the business in the near future.

Meet the Needs of Clients or Customers With Convenience and Accessibility

You may not have your doors open 24/7 and 365 days out of the year.  It may not even be feasible to do so!  However, your online presence can give local searchers access to information about your business at their leisure.  This accessibility and convenience will definitely influence a potential customer’s ultimate decision to give you their business.  Remember online search and the use of the mobile phone (as the new Yellow pages) is fast becoming how your prospective client or customer will find you.

First off I would like to say excellent blog! I had a quick question which I’d like to ask if you do not mind. I was interested to know how you center yourself and clear your thoughts before writing. I’ve had a difficult time clearing my mind in getting my thoughts
out. I do take pleasure in writing however it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are generally lost simply just trying to figure out how to begin.
    Any recommendations or hints? Cheers!

I try to do something drastically different for a few minutes. Then, if I still have a mental block, what I try to do is use a technique called mind-mapping. I grab a piece of paper and just draw a series of cloud balloons and fill them with my thoughts. It’s a kind of mind dump and from there I begin to form ideas that later become articles.
