What is seo copywriting?    According to Wikipedia, SEO or search engine optimization is “the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s “natural” or un-paid (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results. In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine’s users.” 

Seo copywriting seeks to combine the traditional writing skills of hardcopy or print media copywriting with SEO techniques that help your website or web pages to rank high in popular search engines. There are various effective and ethical strategies a professional seo copywriter knows in order to accomplish these objectives and as a small business owner you need to be aware of them.  But why does it matter?

Let me start with a story…Once upon a time, back in the old internet days (1995) a bunch of web savvy seo optimizers seeking to have their websites  rank higher than everybody else’s website started to engage in  “black hat” practices such as excessive keyword stuffing, meta tag optimizing, link stuffing  and duplicating content among other things, that made the average internet users internet experience very unpleasant.  The big search engine giants at the time, Yahoo, Lycos and others, did not like these practices and started penalizing websites for these bad habits.

In 1998 along came a small  and unknown start-up, named Google, employed by several IT gurus  who developed and invented an intelligent way to bypass many of these “black hat’ practices in order to provide relevant fresh web content to internet users.  They were so popular and so good at what  they did, that many people beat a path to their door, and the small start-up grew rapidly and became the 800 pound search engine gorilla that we now need to heed and pay attention to whenever we write content for our websites, blogs, etc.

Then, this 800 pound gorilla came out with a fantastic idea called Google Adwords that enabled. small businesses and large businesses alike to advertise on the internet at a nominal cost and compete on an almost level playing field.  This idea limited advertisers to less than 100 characters to tell their story and a website owner or writer knew he had to become adept at attracting customers with a few important keywords or he stood to lose alot of  money.

In addition,  a website owner, writer, copywriter or seo copywriter encountered a new problem.  He realized he had to walk a delicate tightrope between feeding the 800 pound gorilla and enhancing the internet user’s experience so that the internet user can get the information, product and/or services that he or she was seeking.

He realized that he had to serve two masters, the 800 pound gorilla and the customer that he was trying to get to beat down his door.  He or she realized the answer lay in providing the best content while using the best information on keywords, meta tagging, etc. so that both the 800 pound gorilla (Google) would be happy and reward him or her with higher search engine rankings, and his customers, that were now beating down his door,  would be happy too!

And that, is seo copywriting in a nutshell  for all the rest of us and without the geek speak. (No offense intended to geeks I love them for their phenomenal inventions.  I just can’t speak their language.)
